Your desire to unearth the truth is obstructed by an array of colour coded puzzles, mind-bending physics challenges and the growing fear of exposing your true intentions. As a valued guest, your existence is embedded into the corridors and guest rooms of The Penrose.Įxploration of the striking art-deco hotel will begin to uncover the mysteries of both The Penrose and the uncertainties surrounding your current stay. Dan Smith begins his career with a fusion of walking simulator and a puzzle game that is quite attractive, but can still go deep much more.

You awake at The Penrose hotel, a peaceful yet unsettling refuge from the outside world. Despite some excesses in the levels structure, and the evident low budget, The Spectrum Retreat is a real game design diamond, with a well-structured and engaging narration.

Overall, the price point was good value. The Spectrum Retreat is a challenging, first-person puzzle game set in the near future. If it was more fleshed out, I would have given it a solid 8, cuz the puzzle part is well done. By the end, I still didn't really know what happened and the ending felt lackluster. The concept was good but needed to be more fleshed out. I liked that they tried to add a narrative and also break up the monotony of doing puzzles by adding the hotel aspect and some mystery, but it felt lacking. The music was excellent and gave me a relaxing vibe that complemented the puzzles so well. The voice acting was great and the faceless mannequins were a cool touch. They weren't as satisfying as Talos Principle or Portal 2, but they were satisfying and cool. Overall the puzzles were challenging but not frustrating, so it hit that sweet spot. The last puzzle was especially a treat and felt really satisfying to solve. The aesthetic design of the puzzles was awesome and one of the coolest visuals of any puzzle game I ever played. It was nice to figure things out myself without any instructions. The aesthetic design of I loved the puzzle part of The Spectrum Retreat.

I loved the puzzle part of The Spectrum Retreat.
